Chasing Efficiency

January 14, 2011

Since efficiency has been a big problem since coming to Madison, I figure I need a central location to hold my hypotheses and results.  This post – though not specifically about efficiency – has some good links and some hints for efficiency:  http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f163/fermenting-low-217149/

What could be wrong?

  1. Incomplete conversion of starch to sugar.  Solution:  Do Starch Conversion Test on the mash
  2. Improper mash pH (should be 5.1 – 5.5).  Solution:  Check mash pH (have to shell out the cash, though :/)
  3. Poor milling?  Honestly I’m becoming less sure of this as time goes on.  I would expect this to have a more consistent effect than the wildly swinging efficiencies I’ve seen.
